Boiler Shell Fire tube boiler is the simplest form of internal furnace, vertical fire tube boiler. Fire tube boilers are portable boilers and require small floor space. The steam rate in a fire tube boiler does not exceed 2500 kg per hour and the pressure is limited to 10 bar. A fire tube boiler is a type of boiler in which hot gases flow from a fire through one or (many) tubes that flow through a hermetically closed container of water. The gaseous heat is transferred through the tube wall by thermal conduction, heating the water and finally producing steam. Modern fire tube boilers are used in applications requiring moderate pressure and moderate demand. As the name suggests, the basic structure of a fire tube boiler consists of a tube, in which the fuel is burned and the exhaust gases are transported, located in a pressure vessel filled with water. Usually this type of boiler is adapted for liquid or gaseous fuels, such as petroleum, natural gas and biogas. Fire tube boilers are used to supply steam or warm water in small scale applications. They are usually straight and relatively short so that the hot combustion gases experience a relatively low pressure drop as they pass through them. The exhaust gas path flows from the burner, through one of the chambers, to the other end of the chamber. There the exhaust gases spiral in the opposite direction and return through the fire tube and continue down the chimney. Captions Figure 2. This also allows for load swings where large amounts of steam or hot water are needed in a relatively short time, as is often the case in process applications. Fire tube boilers can suffer a lot of abuse and inattention and still function at a competent level. Fire tube boilers have a life expectancy of 25 years or more. Boilers older than 75 years are known to be operational. Consistent maintenance and careful water treatment go a long way toward insuring the longevity of these boilers.
