Gate Valve

Gate valves are primarily designed for on-off service when straight-line fluid flow and minimum throttling is desired. The gate valve closing member stops or allows flow through the valve and acts like it opens or closes a gate and is called, appropriately, a gate valve.

The gate is also shown to be wedge-shaped, due to its similar shape. When the valve opens, the shut-off portion is pulled all the way into the valve, leaving a full opening for flow to flow. Therefore, there is little pressure drop or flow restriction through the valve. Gate valves are used in many industrial applications including the oil and gas, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, automotive, and marine industries. Gate valves are not suitable for throttling purposes.
